Diving the MUSA: The Ultimate Guide to Cancun’s Underwater Museum

Scuba diving in MUSA Cancun underwater museum with Vision Océanos.

The MUSA (Museo Subacuático de Arte) is one of the most famous conservation projects in the world and a “must-do” for anyone visiting the Mexican Caribbean. Located between Cancun and Isla Mujeres, this underwater gallery features over 500 life-sized sculptures designed to promote coral life.

At Vision Océanos, we take you to the heart of this underwater masterpiece. Whether you are a certified pro or a first-timer, here is everything you need to know.

Why was the MUSA created? The museum was built in 2009 to protect natural reefs by providing an alternative site for divers and snorkelers. Today, these sculptures have transformed into vibrant artificial reefs, covered in fire coral, sponges, and surrounded by schools of tropical fish.

Can beginners dive at the MUSA? Yes, absolutely! In fact, it is the perfect place for your first dive. The depth is shallow (around 8 to 10 meters / 25-30 feet), the water is crystal clear, and the currents are minimal.

What will you see at the MUSA? The most iconic gallery is “The Silent Evolution,” which features 450 statues based on real local people. You will also explore:

The Banker: Statues of businessmen with their heads in the sand.

The VW Beetle: A life-sized concrete car that is now home to lobsters and eels.

The Anthropocene: A concrete Volkswagen with a child sitting on it, symbolizing our impact on nature.

Tips for your MUSA Dive: Bring a camera: The statues are incredibly photogenic and look different every year as coral grows.

Control your buoyancy: We aim to protect the sculptures, so avoid touching the art.

Go with experts: Our guides at Vision Océanos share the fascinating history behind every piece.
