CONFINED WATER SKILLS
Controlled shallow water sessions where you master buoyancy, regulator recovery, mask clearing, and emergency procedures before entering the open ocean.
OPEN WATER DIVES — CARIBBEAN
4 qualifying dives in the Caribbean Sea with your SSI instructor. Each dive builds on the last — By dive 4 you are ready to dive as a certified diver, qualified to 18 metres.
SSI DIGITAL CERTIFICATION

How long does it take to get SSI Open Water Diver certified in Cancún?
At Vision Oceanos in Cancún, the SSI Open Water Diver course takes 2 days. You complete the SSI digital theory and final exam online before you arrive. Each day in Cancún runs from 10:00 AM to about 4:00 PM: theory review, confined-water skills, then two ocean dives, for 4 open water dives in total at reef sites around 10 metres. Total investment: $395 USD. Your SSI digital certification is issued on completion.
What is included in the Open Water Diver course at Vision Oceanos Cancún?
The $395 USD Open Water Diver course at Vision Oceanos includes: SSI course materials and MySSI app access, all confined water sessions, 4 open water qualifying dives in the Caribbean, full scuba equipment (BCD, regulator, mask, fins, tanks), SSI certified instructor, boat and crew, and SSI digital certification card. Wetsuit rental ($10 USD) and marine park reef conservation contribution ($10 USD) are extra.
What are the requirements for the Open Water Diver course?
The minimum age is 10. You should feel comfortable in the water, and before training you complete the SSI medical questionnaire; if any answer requires it, a doctor’s approval is needed before you dive. No previous diving experience is required.
Do I need to study before I arrive in Cancún?
Yes, and it saves you time. As soon as you book, we create your SSI diver profile and send you the SSI digital materials. You complete the theory and the final exam online at your own pace, in several languages including Spanish, so your two days in Cancún are spent in the water.
Where do the open water dives take place?
Your four training dives take place on reef sites inside Cancún’s bay and in the MUSA underwater museum area, at around 10 metres. These calm, shallow sites are ideal for learning, with plenty of tropical fish and coral to enjoy.
How deep can I dive once I am certified?
The SSI Open Water Diver certification qualifies you to dive to 18 metres (60 feet) with a buddy, anywhere in the world. When you are ready to go further, the SSI Advanced Adventurer course takes you to 30 metres.
I already did the theory at home. Can I only do the dives in Cancún?
Yes. With an SSI Referral you complete your training dives with us: the Full Referral includes four open water dives over two days ($295 USD) and the Partial Referral includes the final two dives in one day ($195 USD). You only need your Referral Diver card visible in the MySSI app.
When can I fly after the course?
We recommend planning at least 24 hours between your last dive and your flight. Schedule your course early in your trip so you can relax afterwards.
What happens if the weather does not allow us to dive?
Safety comes first. If conditions do not allow the boat to go out, we let you know in advance and you receive a refund for any part of the course that cannot take place.
