The Waves Tides Currents Specialty Cancún course teaches you to read and manage moving water — drift diving technique, surge management, and safe entries and exits in challenging conditions. You will learn how tides, currents and waves shape a dive site and how to use them to your advantage.
Cancun is the ideal classroom: Punta Cancun and the outer reefs offer real current conditions where these skills genuinely matter. Some resort dive sites worldwide even require this certification before granting access.
The Waves Tides Currents Specialty Cancún course is built for certified divers who want the confidence to dive beyond calm, sheltered bays. During your training dives you will plan around tide tables, practice negative and current entries, learn to use reference points and reef hooks, and master drift-diving signals and team positioning. These are the exact skills that open up Cancun’s outer reefs and drift sites — and travel with you to current-swept destinations around the world.

ONLINE THEORY — MYSSI
How waves, tides and currents form, drift planning, surge management and entry/exit strategy. Completed online before arrival.
DIVE PLANNING & BRIEFING
Your instructor reviews current conditions, drift technique and safety procedures before each dive.
2 CURRENT DIVES
Two open-water dives applying drift and current technique at Punta Cancun and the outer reefs.
SSI SPECIALTY CERTIFICATION
Receive your SSI Waves, Tides & Currents specialty card — valid globally, issued digitally via MySSI.
Prerequisite: SSI Open Water Diver or equivalent. Minimum age 10 years. Pre-flight surface interval applies — minimum 12 hours after shallow dives before flying.
PRICING & WHAT’S INCLUDED
The specialty fee covers your training and certification. The dives are arranged separately, so you only pay for what your specialty actually requires.
SSI course materials, MySSI digital training, instruction and certification. Does not include the dives.
Important: Waves, Tides & Currents is completed in Cancun at Punta Cancun and the outer reefs, where genuine current conditions exist. Two open-water dives are included in the dive package and are weather-dependent — all site decisions follow the daily Capitania de Puerto report. Marine park conservation contribution (+$10 USD) and wetsuit rental (+$10 USD) are always extra.
