What is the SSI Scuba Diver certification?
The SSI Scuba Diver certification is an internationally recognised entry-level scuba credential. It qualifies you to dive to a maximum depth of 12 metres under the direct supervision of an SSI Professional. At Vision Oceanos in Cancún the program is completed in one day and includes two open water training dives — $295 USD per person.
How long does the SSI Scuba Diver course take in Cancún?
One day. You complete your SSI digital learning online before your scheduled date, then meet your SSI instructor for the briefing and essential safety skills, and make two open water training dives on Cancún’s Caribbean reefs. Your digital certification is issued in the MySSI app after successful completion.
What is the difference between Scuba Diver and Open Water Diver?
Scuba Diver certifies you to 12 metres, always accompanied by a dive professional, and takes one day ($295 USD). Open Water Diver certifies you to 18 metres and lets you dive with a certified buddy without professional supervision, over 2 days ($395 USD). The training you complete as a Scuba Diver counts toward upgrading to Open Water Diver later.
What are the requirements to take the SSI Scuba Diver program?
No previous scuba certification is required. You must be at least 10 years old, complete the SSI digital learning before the activity, complete the SSI medical questionnaire (medical clearance may be required), and have basic swimming ability and comfort in the water. Minors need parent or legal guardian authorization.
What is included in the $295 USD price?
Two open water training dives, full scuba equipment, your SSI certified instructor, boat and crew, water on board, small groups, and your SSI digital certification with processing. Wetsuit rental (+$10 USD) and the marine park reef conservation contribution (+$10 USD) are always extra.

Is the Scuba Diver course the same as an Open Water Referral?
No, even though the Scuba Diver and the Open Water Full Referral share the same $295 USD price. The SSI Scuba Diver is a complete certification on its own for new divers: one day, two ocean dives, certified to 12 metres and always diving with a dive professional. The Open Water Full Referral ($295 USD) is for divers who already completed their Open Water theory and confined water training with SSI at home: in Cancún they make four ocean dives over two days and earn the full Open Water Diver certification, to 18 metres with a buddy. The Open Water Partial Referral ($195 USD) is for divers who only have their final two ocean dives left.
Which program is right for me?
Try Scuba ($99 USD) is a one-time experience with an instructor and no certification. SSI Scuba Diver ($295 USD) gives you a certification in one day to dive to 12 metres with a dive professional. SSI Open Water Diver ($395 USD) is the full certification in two days, to dive to 18 metres with a buddy anywhere in the world. If you already started your Open Water course with SSI at home, choose the Full Referral or the Partial Referral, depending on how many ocean dives you have left.
