Best Time to Scuba Dive in Cancún: A Month-by-Month Guide
Cancún is a year-round dive destination. The Caribbean stays warm in every month, the reefs inside the bay are sheltered, and the cenotes inland are untouched by wind and waves. What changes through the year is the weather above the water, the sea temperature, and how busy the boats are. This guide walks you through each season so you can choose the right month for the dives you have in mind.
THREE SEASONS, ONE SEA
Settled and sunny
The driest months and the busiest. Water around 25–27 °C. A light wetsuit is welcome from January to March. Book ahead.
The warmest water
Sea temperatures reach 28–29 °C. Long, bright days and relaxed afternoons on the reef. Ideal for first-time divers.
Warm and quiet
The quietest boats of the year and water still near 28 °C. Peak of hurricane season, so keep a flexible day in your plans.

WHAT EACH TIME OF YEAR FEELS LIKE
December to March
Clear skies, cooler evenings and the year’s highest demand. This is the heart of the spotted eagle ray season: they gather around the C-55 and C-58 shipwrecks, and on good days divers see 10, 20, even 30 of them together. Winter brings occasional northerly fronts, known locally as nortes, that can close the port for a day or two. When that happens we do not sail, and you choose between a new date or a full refund. We dive every day of the season except December 25.
April and May
For many divers, the sweet spot: dry weather, calmer winds and water warming toward 27 °C. Excellent months for relaxed reef diving and the MUSA.
June to August
The warmest water of the year and long summer days. Hurricane season officially begins on June 1, though the early months are usually calm. A wonderful time to try scuba or complete your certification.
September to November
The quietest boats and still-warm water. This is the most active part of hurricane season, so we watch the forecast closely and confirm every departure. Late November is when the spotted eagle rays arrive at the shipwrecks, the start of their season and one of the best moments of the year to dive before the winter crowds.

THREE THINGS WORTH KNOWING
- Book early for December to April. It is our busiest season, and groups are kept to a maximum of four divers per guide.
- Leave time before your flight. Plan at least 12 to 24 hours between your last dive and flying, depending on your dives. See our Scuba FAQ for details.
- Keep one flexible day. Especially from September to March, a spare day lets us move your dive if the port closes.
FREQUENTLY ASKED
When is the best time to scuba dive in Cancún?
You can dive Cancún all year. December to May brings the driest, most settled weather; June to October has the warmest water. If you want the calmest balance of weather and water temperature, April and May are excellent; for the spotted eagle rays on the shipwrecks, come from late November through winter.
Is it cold to dive in Cancún in winter?
Not by most standards. The sea averages around 25 °C (77 °F) from January to March. A 3 mm wetsuit, available to rent for $10 USD, keeps most divers comfortable through a two-tank morning or afternoon.
Can I dive in Cancún during hurricane season?
Yes. Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, but most days are perfectly diveable. We follow the port authority every day; if conditions do not allow us to sail, the boat stays in and your payment is refunded in full.
Are cenotes affected by the season?
Very little. Cenotes are freshwater caverns protected from wind and waves, so they are a reliable option year-round, including days when the sea is closed.
